| Résumé | Excavations held in the early 1960s on the site of saint Martial memoria, in Limoges, led to the discovery of a mosaic. According to scriptural sources and archeological evidence, this mosaic dated from the carolingian times in an important study published soon after the discovery. Since then, most scholars have agreed with the dates, even if, at the same time, all of them point to the fact that its style is very close to late antique or early christian mosaics. The scriptural evidence used to date the memoria’s setting in this early publication have long been criticized. For the mosaic, we will try to show that the so-called archeological evidence is also indeterminate. It is therefore highly probable that this mosaics is not carolingian, but probably belongs to the Sixth Century. |
